Combining modern functionality, a traditional home, and two cultures created this home renovation and vertical addition. The new third floor aligns with the existing roof slope and first floor stairs to create a cohesive exterior to fully maximize space. Inside, the first floor plan includes a relocated dining area, making way for an expansive kitchen and island perfect for entertaining. A “cube of commodity” surrounds the powder room to tuck away tchotchkes, while upstairs, built-ins provide much desired storage. Finally, the new third floor tucks extensive closet space into the wall. In a limited square footage, designing rooms with enough storage has to get creative! The custom office space and floating stairs are both defined with clean lines, and the cut outs to break down the stair wall mimic the slope of the ceiling, a small yet satisfying architectural detail.
